2009-2010 PMVL Rules
General Play - All Divisions
1. Matches will start at 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. at Bishop Smith Catholic High. A warm-up of 10 minutes will be allowed before the start of a match if matches are on time. If matches are running behind schedule teams will be allowed only a 5 minute warm-up. Teams who do not have the required number of players to start a game will default games as follows: 1st game at the scheduled game time; 2nd game 15 minutes after the scheduled game time; and the third game at 30 minutes past the scheduled game time. Teams are asked to leave the court 15 minutes before the start of the next match if their match is over.
2. The best three out of five will determine a winning team during the regular season. Games will be rally point to 25 points and a team must win with a two point margin. The fifth game will be played to 15 points and must be decided by a two point margin. A serve is legal if it contacts the net and lands in the opponents court.
3. One point will be awarded to the winning team of each game.
4. During regular season play "Gentlemen's Rules" shall apply when officials are not used. Make score known after every point.
5. Two time outs (30 seconds) will be granted per game per team.
6. There will be a three minute break between matches.
7. Coin toss to start the first and fifth game and alternate service for each of the second, third, and fourth games. Winning team must take up positions on the court first.
8. A team may play with any of the following formats: 2 males, 2 females; 1 male, 3 females; 2 males, 3 females; 3 males, 3 females; 1 male, 4 females; 2 males, 4 females; 1 male, 5 females; 6 females.
9. Teams using a four (4) player format will be allowed to play with 1 player in the back court providing the other three positions are in proper rotation. The server must occupy the #1 position on service reception.
10. If the minimum requirement of players are not met, the opposing team accumulates 3 points, provided they have the required number players. If the defaulting team has contacted the opposing team by noon of the day of the match the opposing team will be allowed to qualify individuals from the last game sheet for player eligibility. Additional players may be added if they present themselves to the referee at the normally scheduled game time and identify that they wish to be added to the defaulted games game sheet.
11. Officials will be supplied for all regular season, and play-off matches, if available.
12. Teams are required to pay the balance of league fees by their third scheduled match.
13. The league will refund registration fees to referees at the rate of 20% for 20 matches, 50% for 30 matches, and 100% for 60 matches.
14. Height of the Net -- 2.35m (Jr. Boys height)
15. Any rule not covered above will be applied according to the 2005/2006 Canadian Volleyball Association Rule Book.
General Play - B & C Divisions Only
16. A five serve maximum will be applied to play in the B and C divisions.
Warnings/Penalties
17. The Penalty formal is as follows:
WARNING: For minor misconduct not quite reaching /warranting the penalty level, referee gives a verbal warning only (no cards used, and nothing is recorded on the score sheet).
YELLOW CARD (Penalty): Given for the first occurrence of "Rude conduct" ("Action contrary to good manners or moral principles, or expressing contempt") by any player (or coach) in a match.
Penalty given: Loss of rally (i.e. point to the opponents and loss of serve if
the offending team was serving). Penalty is recorded on the score sheet.
RED CARD (Expulsion): Given for: (A) First occurrence of "Offensive conduct" (defamatory or insulting words or gestures) by any player in a match. Or (B) Second occurrence of "Rude Conduct" by the same player in a match.
Penalty given: Expulsion of the player for the remainder of that set. Player is
to sit in a "penalty area" away from the team bench. Recorded on the score
sheet. (No other penalty - i.e. no loss of point).
NOTE: If the team is unable to make a legal substitution for the expelled
player to maintain minimum number of players on court then the team would
be declared incomplete and lose the set by default.
RED CARD PLUS YELLOW CARDS (Disqualification): Given for: (A) First occurrence of "Aggressive Conduct" (physical attack or intended aggression) by any player in a match. Or (B) Second occurrence of "Offensive Conduct" by the same player during a match. Or (C) Third occurrence of "Rude Conduct" by the same player during a match.
Penalty given: Disqualification of the player for the rest of that match. Player
must leave the gym. Recorded on scoresheet (No other penalty - i.e. no loss
of point).
NOTE: As above, if team cannot legally substitute for the disqualified player to
maintain minimum number on court then they default the match.
Player Eligibility
18. To qualify for play in the playoffs, each player must be present for 7 matches.
a) To be marked as present on the scoresheet, a player must play in, or be present for, one complete set (ie. one game tp 25).
b) Only names appearing on properly completed and signed game sheets will qualify for the eligibility requirements.
19. Players are allowed to switch teams as long as they have not reached their seven matches with another team. Once a player has reached the seven matches with a team they can still switch teams but they will only be allowed to return to the team previously registered with if (by submitting a written request) approval has been received from the league executive. In order to be eligible for the play-offs each player must have been registered in seven matches of the last team registered with.
a) In addition to the above rules 'B' division players will be allowed to play with any 'A' team during the regular season and still return to play on their regular 'B' team. Players will not be eligible for 'A' division play-offs unless they have declared to the league executive that they have formally left their 'B' division team and have played the required number of games to qualify for 'A' play-offs. 'B' division players cannot play for an 'A' team when their regular team would be left without enough players to field a team.
20. 'A' Division rostered players CANNOT play for a team in the 'B' or 'C' divisions. Likewise, 'B' division player cannot play for a 'C' division team. If a player plays down a division, the offending team will forefeit the match.
Non-Rostered Subs
21. Once non-rostered subs play 3 games in particular a division, they become marked as a divisional sub and CANNOT play as a sub in a lower division (but are able to be called up a division if necessary).
